Kontekstistaan irroitettuna tästä jakeesta ehkä nousee mieleen kuva siitä, miten Hurskas Minä, yllään Jumalan koko sota-asu ja kädessään Hengen miekka, seisoo vastustamassa Perkelettä. Siitähän tässä on kyse, eikö olekin...? - Ei taida olla. Onko diabolos (panettelija) todellakin uskovan ulkopuolella?? Epäilen, että se asuu uskovan lihassa, jota ei ole naulittu ristille.

Vastustakaa sitä perkelettä, ts pahan puhumista ja riitelyä, himoja ja maailmallisuutta. Eikö sitä vastusteta suitsemalla suunsa niin, ettei sieltä tule ulos panettelua, herjausta ja riitelyä? Eikö uskova kykenisi hillitsemään diabolostaan? "Puhdistakaa kätenne, te syntiset, ja tehkää sydämenne puhtaiksi, te kaksimieliset." Onko se perkele siis uskovan sisä- vai ulkopuolella?

PERKELE KÄY YMPÄRI KUIN KILJUVA JALOPEURA

Tässä Pietari kirjoittaa ensin ohjeistusta seurakunnan vanhimmille, mutta sopii siitä muidenkin ottaa oppia. Se perkele (panetteleva, herjaava) on jatkuvasti lähellä. Sitä pitää vastustaa ettei liha, vanha aadamilainen luonto ota valtaansa ja nielaise uutta luomusta. Joillain liha provosoituu herkästi melko mitättömistäkin asioista. Se on omassa vallassamme, miten hienohipiäisiä me olemme, annammeko lihalle ylivallan ja maksamme potut pottuina. Jokainen veli ja sisko käy samaa taistelua (jae 9). 

1 Vanhimpia teidän joukossanne minä siis kehoitan, minä, joka myös olen vanhin ja Kristuksen kärsimysten todistaja ja osallinen myös siihen kirkkauteen, joka vastedes on ilmestyvä:
2 kaitkaa teille uskottua Jumalan laumaa, ei pakosta (lihan mieli), vaan vapaaehtoisesti (hengen mieli), Jumalan tahdon mukaan, ei häpeällisen voiton tähden (lihan mieli), vaan sydämen halusta (hengen mieli),
