Herra Jumala istutti paratiisin Eedeniin, itään (gedem), ja asetti sinne ihmisen, jonka hän oli tehnyt.

Heprean kieli kuvaa ilmansuunnat eri tavalla kuin mitä länsimainen ihminen on tottunut ajattelemaan. Meillä itä ja länsi mielletään olevan oikealla ja vasemmalla puolella. Heprean kielessä ilmansuunnista puhuttaessa ihminen seisoo kasvot itään päin, jolloin etelä (teyman 8486) on oikealla (yamiyn 3225) ja pohjoinen (tsaphown 6828) on vasemmalla (semo'wl 8040). Pohjoisen (tsaphown) juuriverbi on tsaphan (6845); kätkeä, piilottaa. Pohjoinen puhuu myös kätketystä aarteesta (tsaphiyn 6840; Ps. 17:14), eikä se tarkoita Suomea.

Kun Israelissa seisoo kasvot itään päin, selän takana on silloin meri (yam 3220), joka tarkoittaa samalla myös länsi. Kasvojen edessä oleva itä (qedem 6942) puhuu kohtaamisesta, tulevasta ja muinaisuudesta, siitä mitä ennen oli, mitä oli alussa (qadam 6923). Jumala on maailman luomisessa säätänyt auringon nousemaan idästä. Heprean kieli kirjoitetaan oikealta vasemmalle, eli idästä länteen. Ilmestysmajan etupuoli oli itäänpäin ja sen eteen leiriytyivät Juudan, Isaskarin ja Sebulonin sukukunnat. Temppeli ja synagoogat rakennettiin saman suuntaisesti. Jerusalemin muurin ainoa itään päin oleva portti on Kultaportti (Sha`ar HaRachamimi), jota Apt. 3:2 sanotaan myös Kauniiksi portiksi. Se on nyt kiinnimuurattu, mutta Herra Jeesus Messiaana ja Kuninkaana tulee pianastumaan sisään siitä portista.
